Flight in Israel

Today was my first flight in Israel ever ! Woot !

I always wanted to fly in Israel, and I am glad I finally had a chance to. I arranged a flight out of the Megido airport (near Afula) in a Cessna 172 and with a local instructor, Hillel.

The airplane was crappy as hell, but in safe flying condition. Super old radios, VOR with needles dancing all over the dial, etc. I think that I never flew an airplane that looked so beat up. Also, they lended me a headset. It also was in bad condition and the mike would not stay in front of my mouth. In the middle of the flight, Hillel pulled out a screwdriver and fixed the headset (while I was wearing it). That was funny !

Another new experience for me was air traffic control in Hebrew. It's the first flight in my life where I have no clue what ATC is saying. Although, sometimes I could guess some of the messages by the timing or the structure. In Israel, most of the airspace seem to be under military ATC, even for civilian aircraft. That meant that there was radio chatter and interaction for all our flight.

We flew out of Megido airport, along the city of Afula, next to Mount Gilboa, over the Lake of Gallilea, over Tiberias, and back to Megido.

Crappy panel. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture of the radios (you can see a few centimeters on the right), which were the worse part. The instruments shown on this picture are OK, and fairly typical of an older Cessna 172.

I will now try to arrange an additional flight out of Sde Dov, the Tel Aviv airport by the beach.
